Citroën 2CV returns as a modifed Citroen C3; first spy picture

Update: 01/04/10: It turns out that this spy-shot is indeed an camouflagued C3 supermini, intended as an April fools joke by Greek car magazine '4 Wheels'. Click here for more.

Spy photographers have caught what seems to be a test mule for the second generation 2CV supermini. Snapped undergoing chassis testing outside Citroën's HQ in Belchamps, France, the mule seems to be based on the C3 supermini - suggesting the newcomer will underpin the C3 platform.

The original 2CV was famous for its comfortable ride and low fuel consumption, so using the C3 platform will allow Citroën engineers to tamper with the suspension and use fuel-efficient engines. Whilst also being quite modern, the 2CV won’t forget it roots; a chiselled bonnet leading down the top radiator grille and over-sized rear fenders will remain.

Set to be unveiled at the Paris motorshow in 2012, the 2CV could have a name change. Names like DS2 and DS2i have been rumoured, hinting the car will be more upscale compared with the 62 year old original, which was known for being 'cheap and cheerful'. This potential change will leave space for Citroën's forthcoming Cactus supermini as the firms budget car and gives Citroën a rival to the Fiat 500, Volkswagen Beetle and Mini Cooper as an affordable, retro-styled, must-have car. Closer inspection indicates that the car is very likely to feature a roll-back canvas top, rather than a panoramic glass roof. Whether the fabric top will be electrical remains to be seen.

Powering the ‘Tin Snail’, ‘The Duck, ‘Little Freak’, ‘Two Horses’, whatever you want to call it, will be a range of 3 & 4 cylinder petrol and diesel engines; 1.0 litre 68bhp, 1.4 litre 75bhp & 95bhp, 1.4 HDi 70bhp & 1.6 HDi 90bhp. However, speculation reveals that a diesel-hybrid or an EV could be in the pipeline.

The 2CV will feature modern safety equipment like ESP, ABS, x2 airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners, active headrests and lots more. We also expect a wide-range of options and accessories to be made available to customers. Prices could start at £8,000 when the car its UK shores in 2013.

Ford With Force: On The Way To The Promise Land

As an avid fan of Ford vehicles, I can really say that Ford cars are absolutely power performers. There’s no doubt about that! There are lots of instances when Ford cars have proven that they are the world renowned champion… And they will keep on fighting ‘til the end! Even my Mercedes car with splendid Mercedes Benz headlight rims cannot defy the power that is packed on every Ford vehicle!

Talk about power and speed, another Ford vehicle has displayed an exquisite performance on the race tracks! I’m talking about the Castrol GTX High Mileage Ford Mustang! This muscle racing car is driven by John Force, one of Ford Racing’s outstanding drivers. The Mustang and John Force are headed to their ultimate goal… the inaugural NHRA Countdown to the Championship! They sealed the championship berth by winning the event at the Lucas Oil Nationals in Brainerd, Minnesota.

From the news that I’ve read on FordRacing.com, John Force was asked: "Do you believe in momentum? Can you carry this over into this weekend at reading, and through the rest of the year?" John Forced replied, “Without a doubt. When you get on a roll, I’ve had where I won five races in a row before, five National events. I’ve won Brainard at least 11 times now. So, that’s quite an accomplishment. I don’t think anybody has won it more than three times. What’s amazing is you can get on a roll because of your mental attitude. We were beat-up pretty good, but I got to tell you what, we’ve learned how to win, but long before we won - 15 championships as a team and 14 as a driver, myself - before we won all that I had a lot of practice at losing, and I never gave up losing. I never accept that. Was I on overload? Everything between getting organized and on the new projects, it was a ton of overload, but I never forgot how I won. And [crew chief, Austin] Coil and I, one thing about it, we never panicked, we never talked about should we shuffle things around.

“We lost major players. Dean Antonelli went to run Ashley’s car and it was flying; now it’s struggling. But the racing events have almost become a two-shot race. You’ve got to get it qualified in two shots, because in the four, you’re put in the heat of the day. You’ve got to get those two shots in. If you struggle, then you’ve got a long shot in qualifying in the heat. But, what we never did was change the way we got here. We don’t just jump up and say ‘Well, the driver’s bad or crew chief’s bad, let’s make a change.’ I don’t do the game that way!"

2010 Audi A4

The 2010 Audi A4 continues to be one of the best four-door sedans on the sell. Starting at $33,175, it offers an interior that is beautiful and comfortable; face styling that is subtle, yet tempting and sporty; and, with Quattro all-wheel drive, driving dynamics that whole for any climate. Our inspection car came with the base, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-tube engine mated to a silky smooth six-measure directions transmission. It is optioned out as a Premium Plus reel, taking a $3550 jolt in pament with some nice amenities like Xenon headlights with the stress grabbing LED daytime-running lights, and heated facade seats. Also mention is a $1475 merriment combination that adds 18-inch wheels, merriment suspension, and merriment seats. This combination is well worth the opulence , the car rides firmly and provides superb cornering even with Michelin winter tires mounted. The back seats provide fat room for two adults to fit comfortably and a deep trunk allows for plenty of storage. If you can preoccupy from optioning the 2010 Audi A4 over $40,000, it is really a nice value.

Vauxhall introduces entry-level Corsa, Astra, Zafira & Insignia (UK)

Vauxhall has launched cheaper versions of many of its models. The new Expression and ES models are up to £3,675 less expensive than the previous cheapest version. The maximum headline saving is with the Zafira Expression, which now costs from £14,995 - a saving of £3,675.

Most of the new variants come with less equipment. You don't even get air-conditioning in the Zafira, however, the only exception to this is the Insignia ES, which is £1,700 cheaper but comes with upgraded wheels and MP3 compatible stereo system.

The Corsa Expression starts at £9,995 and you don't even get electric front windows or central locking, however, the entry-level Fiesta Studio starts at £11,536 with similar features.

For £13,995, the Astra Sport Hatch and Astra 5dr Expression doesn't get cruise control, dusk & rain sensor, leather steering wheel and the latter makes do with a 86bhp, 1.4 litre petrol engine. The Astra Twin-Top, from £17,995 doesn't differ from the 1.6 litre Air variant.

The Zafira Expression, from £14,995 has no air conditioning or roof-rails, but you do get steel wheels and body-coloured door mirrors.

For £17,120, the Insignia ES adds equipment rather than taking it away. Upgraded wheels and MP3 compatible stereo are now standard.

All of the Expression and ES cars are available for a limited period in solid white or red paints.

Special edition Fiat 500C Pink launched (UK)

Fiat has launched a Pink special edition for the 500C. Unlike the hatchback, which went on sale in January, just 300 models will be made (compared with the 500 models of the 500 hatchback).

The 500C Pink is based on the 1.2 Pop variant and at £13,500, it costs £1,200 more than the non-Pink car. However, Fiat says the 500C Pink comes with £1,870 worth of extra features. These include 16" alloy wheels, chrome trim, body-coloured door mirrors, leather steering wheel and gearknob, Blue&Me infotainment system, carpet mats and a split folding rear seat.

The editors of Road and Track named the Nissan 350Z one of the best sports cars under 30 grand and said, "This is a true sports coupe." I'd have to agree, seeing as though the 350Z's VQ engine received the 2007 Ward's 10 Best Engines Award. And due to the fact that I admittedly have a soft spot for sports cars with the Z badge.

Over the past few years, Nissan has improved the car's ride and overall daily-driver appeal, while improving the horsepower at the same time. Current 350Z's have the VQ35HR 3.5L V6 that turns out 306 HP and 268 lb-ft of torque, the same engine shared with its Infiniti G35 cousin, just with less horsepower. Consequently, the Infiniti G35 could have easily made it onto this list, if it weren't for the Nissan 350Z producing more horsepower for less money with the same engine. With a 0-60 mph time of 5.2 seconds (Car and Driver), you're getting a lot of speed for a sports car that starts at just under $28,000.

Ford Mustang GT Deluxe
A classic sports car favorite among most of us and one of J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Initial Quality winners as well. Incidentally, Ford won a total of five of these awards this month for their various vehicles. The Ford Mustang GT classic 4.6L engine shows that sometimes 300 HP just feels better when it's coming from a grumbling V8 that will put a smile on your face in 4.9 seconds (Road and Track). And with a price tag of only $25,695 you'll never be sorry with the Ford Mustang GT.

If 300 horses aren't enough for you, then you can always jump up to the Ford Mustang Shelby GT, which adds an extra 19 wild horses to the pack. But then again, you'd just be missing that $35,000 mark. While you're there, you might as well take a look at the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 that so many of us love to see fly past us.

Honda S2000

Possibly the purest sports car in this group, what the Honda S2000 lacks in overall power and amenities, it more then makes up for in handling and driving pleasure. The S2000 can make sports cars costing twice as much blush on the twisties. Since this little monster's debut as a 2000 model, not much has changed to the overall design. A few changes on the outside have kept a modern look, but the interior is way past its expiration date. Some nice tweaking over the years by Honda has improved the mid-range torque issues and everyday drivability over earlier models.

This 2.2L naturally aspirated four cylinder produces 237HP and gives the driver a 0-60 time of 5.8 seconds. The 50/50 weight balance helps keep the Honda S2000's wheels under control, as does the limited slip differential. If you want a spicier looking Honda S2000 with no air conditioning or radio, wait until the release of the S2000 CR in the fall. It should be about 90 lbs lighter than the original and be the "Closest thing you can get to a Honda-built racecar with license plate holders and a horn," according to John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

Pontiac Solstice GXP/Saturn Sky Red Line

The new GXP version of the Solstice is powered by a 260 horsepower two-liter engine with direct fuel injection, variable valve timing and a turbocharger. The GXP also gets sportier suspension tuning, StabiliTrak, and styling enhancements.

Turbo lag is minimal, as is the trunk space, so you won't be waiting around for long to get this sports car going. With an MSRP at $27,115 this sports car won't get you down the road as fast or as cheap as the Ford Mustang GT, but the extra style and sex appeal will allow you to get the looks you want while you cruise.

Audi TT 2.0T

Last but not least comes the Audi TT, which just scrapes the top of our 35 grand budget at $34,800. The 2007 TT has that oh-my-good-ness curb appeal you want from a sports car. The base level Audi TT comes with a 2.0L turbo-charged engine, shared from the A3, which produces 200HP and seven more lbs-ft of torque. The only options you can add to the 2.0T are satellite radio and heated front seats, but it comes with fringe benefits you'd expect to find in an Audi, like a tire pressure monitor system, retractable rear spoiler and automatic climate control.

With a 0-60mph time of 6.2 seconds, the Audi TT isn't as fast as some of the other cars on this list, but consider that what's under the hood won Engine of the Year for both 2006 and 2007 in the International Engine of the Year competition. Audi says that the 2.0 TFSI engine, "combines vigorous pulling power with particularly high everyday suitability."
